Regularly shopping for our baguettes, brie and brioche at Marché Richard Lenoir, one of the city’s most well-known markets. And one we were lucky enough to have just a few minutes stroll from our apartment.

This Sunday we decided it was time to explore the markets of our new city, Kuala Lumpur. After moving East almost a month ago we discovered the journey to one of the locals’ markets would take a little longer than a few minutes stroll, but let me tell you - it was well worth it!

Chow Kit Market is one of the city’s largest ‘wet’ markets and it was here we were to begin understanding a little more about how local Malaysians shop for their fresh produce. Located along Jalan Tuanku Abul Rahman, Chow Kit is a maze of stalls attended by friendly, hard-working stall holders. Rows and rows of simple table tops overflowing with an abundance of fresh produce: tropical fruits, bags of spices, deep red chillies, luscious green chillies… all neatly arranged & hand selected by the vendors.

Then there are the meat stalls - chickens: whole, far from whole and some in cages, beef: hooves and heads, hind legs and rump all hanging from hooks, fish: dried, chilled and some still swimming in buckets… so much meat and fish… up, close and personal in a crowded market place… its easy to imagine the smell would be overwhelming but to our great surprise, the air was clear and clean. What became evident was - this is a functional market, a place of business, locals buying from locals and very few, if any, tourists.

Although we came back with little more than a few photographs, slightly smelly shoes and a sense of discovery … next time we WILL be taking our shopping list.

Chow Kit Market is open seven days a week, 9am-5pm. Closest KL monorail station: Chow Kit

It is, however, often accompanied by a chilly wind, long grey days and a overall sense of gloom.

Since arriving in Malaysia three weeks ago, it’s quickly become part of our everyday life here too - after all, it is the beginning of the Rainy Season! The main differences we are now understanding: shorts and open toe shoes are still an option, any grey spell is interspersed with blue sky and sunshine & the overall sense of gloom… well, that’s just a state of mind… a quick dip in the pool will always help to lift a bad day.
